Traveling to Mayotte at the end of December, the Minister of the Interior is continuing his offensive against illegal immigration.

Gérald Darmanin has announced that the presence of Raid agents on the island will be permanent for several months, until the "difficulties" on Mahoran territory disappear.

This Saturday afternoon, the Minister of the Interior was traveling to Mayotte.

Gérald Darmanin will spend New Year's Eve in Mayotte, alongside the police and gendarmes stationed on the island.

This move comes as the French territory has been plagued by numerous violence between young people from rival neighborhoods since the fall.

These clashes resulted in one death and several injuries.

Mayotte has also been a major land of illegal immigration for many years.

This trip is an opportunity for the minister to make new announcements on security and immigration.

Developing technology to help law enforcement

"We must absolutely protect Mayotte and the Mayotte territory in particular, from irregular immigration", maintains Gérald Darmanin.

"We have enormously increased the number of police and gendarmerie personnel: there are twice as many police officers and gendarmes on Mahoran territory", he recalls, "but we can clearly see that these personnel must be helped by technology ."

The minister speaks in particular of "boats, which make it possible to prevent the arrival of irregular immigration", but also of "radar" and "aerial means" such as drones.

After the events that occurred last fall in Mayotte, Gérald Darmanin had also decided to send the Raid.

"I am announcing it to you, I have decided to perpetuate the presence of the two men from the Raid here for the several months that the difficulties that we are experiencing in Mayotte will still last."
