The Swedish bankruptcy list has been compiled by the credit information company Creditsafe, and shows that mobile companies dominate the top for the third year in a row.

They are behind ten out of twenty of the largest bankruptcies, ranked by the companies' official turnover.

The five at the top must have a combined turnover of over ten billion.

The authorities suspect that it is largely a matter of sham business - but with the aim of demanding huge refunds of VAT from the state.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office EPPO today describes the mobile scam as the EU's biggest VAT fraud ever.

Under the name Operation Admiral, raids were carried out in a number of countries in November, seizing cars and watches, among other things.

According to the prosecutors, there are clear links between the mobile phone scam and other organized crime.

Among other things, money from drug trafficking is suspected of being used to build up the corporate structures required to carry out the frauds.

Lawyer and accountant punished

In Sweden, more than 20 prosecutors are currently working with a total of more than 60 cases in the mix.

Over a hundred companies have had operations in, among other places, Västmanland, Örebro, Värmland and Västernorrland.

A number of prosecutions have been brought and multi-year prison sentences have been handed down in Skåne, Stockholm and Halland.

A lawyer has also lost his license and an accountant received a warning for his actions regarding the companies.

Linked to the stock exchange favorite's partner

SVT has been reviewing the mobile mess since 2019, and has previously reported on several of the players on the brink of bankruptcy.

This applies, for example, to the second largest bankrupt company, which was run by a circle of people who also figured around the booming medical technology company Aegirbio's partner company.

In that case, new documents now also show that the connections may be stronger than what was previously known (see fact box).

The representatives of the designated companies have rejected all accusations of crime and other irregularities.
