It is not really a new law, but an amendment to the Environmental Code Act.

Throwing small rubbish on the ground has been prohibited in the past, but now it will also be punishable.

- Glass bottles, fast food boxes and the like we have been able to report on before, says police officer Mikael Ericsson.

But it is primarily small rubbish such as cigarette butts and snuff that make up the largest amount of rubbish.

On behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the organization Keep Sweden Clean carried out a garbage survey last year.

During one week, 35 million items of rubbish were collected, of which around 80 percent of the rubbish consisted of cigarette butts and snuff.

- It is important to throw away your cigarette butt in an adequate place, says Mikael Ericsson.
