Palestinian official: The Israeli Defense Minister called Abbas goodbye

The Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein Al-Sheikh, stated that President Mahmoud Abbas received this evening, Wednesday, a phone call from Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, bidding farewell on the eve of the announcement of a new government in Israel.

Al-Sheikh said in a brief statement that Abbas "stressed during the call the importance of stopping all attacks and incursions by the occupation forces and settlers."

He added that Abbas also stressed "the importance of creating a political path that ends the occupation in accordance with international legitimacy."

For its part, Israeli sources said that Gantz discussed with Abbas "the continuation of maintaining the security coordination channel between the Palestinian Authority and Israel," and warned him of the consequences of continuing to approach the institutions seeking to sue Israel as "steps that will harm the Palestinian people."

The call came while Gantz is spending his last night in the position of Israeli Defense Minister, to be succeeded tomorrow in the right-wing government by Likud Minister Yoav Gallant.

It is scheduled to vote tomorrow to announce the new Israeli government in the Knesset (parliament) led by Benjamin Netanyahu, which will include a coalition of right-wing parties known for their anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab positions.
