The new Chukavin sniper rifle (SHF) has increased range and accuracy of fire compared to its predecessor, the Dragunov rifle.

This was stated by the president of the concern "Kalashnikov" Alan Lushnikov.

“This is a very good rifle.

Fundamentally new quality.

It allows you to conduct aimed shooting at a distance of up to a kilometer, and the previous version - SVD (Dragunov sniper rifle. -

RT

) - up to 800 m. And its accuracy parameters, of course, are significantly better than those of SVD.

This is already at the level of the senior sniper line: we still have such a product, it is produced in small quantities - SV-98, ”Lushnikov said on the air of the Russia 24 channel.

According to the president of the Kalashnikov Concern, the microwave has an improved buttstock and ergonomics, and has the ability to mount a low-noise firing device.

The rifle has been successfully tested.

Earlier, Alan Lushnikov said that microwaves are already being delivered to the special operation zone in Ukraine, and the concern is studying military reviews on the use of new weapons.

“We constantly receive feedback from our military who take part in the NWO.

And this is precisely the task that the president sets before us.

In our concern, such feedback has been established with the military, and based on feedback on combat use, we are constantly making changes to our products ... And according to our new products, which are already being delivered to the NVO zone, this is the Chukavin sniper rifle (SHF) and Kalashnikov submachine gun (PPK-20) - feedback is also carefully studied and taken into account, ”said Lushnikov.

New Solutions

For the first time, the Chukavin sniper rifle was shown to the general public at the Army-2017 forum.

The SHF is a semi-automatic sniper rifle.

The rifle will be available in 7.62×54mm and 7.62×51mm NATO rounds.

The mass of the weapon is 4.2 kg, the firing range, depending on the cartridge used, is up to 1.2 km.

This rifle is designed to defeat enemy manpower at short and medium distances in combined arms combat.

Its small dimensions allow the sniper to do without additional weapons, and if necessary, the microwave can be used in close combat.

Microwave developers note that the new rifle is made according to the so-called curtain scheme: its internal mechanisms are conditionally divided into upper and lower parts.

The barrel is rigidly mounted on the top.

The rifle itself is made of durable metal and takes on the entire load when firing.

Since the lower part is not subject to vibrations, it can be made as light as possible, and the elements installed on it are made of polymeric materials.

This design differs significantly from the traditional layout of the Dragunov rifle or AK assault rifles, where the main structural elements are installed from below, which limits the developers in the use of lightweight materials.

Another feature of the microwave design: the stock, receiver and barrel of the weapon are on the same axis.

According to the developers, this reduces the toss of weapons when firing.

The microwave is equipped with a telescopic buttstock with an adjustable cheek and a Picatinny rail along the entire length of the receiver, on which you can install any attachments.

State tests of the Chukavin rifle were completed in October 2021.

In August, Alan Lushnikov announced that in 2022 the microwave will be delivered to the troops.

Then in November, the president of Kalashnikov announced that the Russian Defense Ministry had signed contracts to supply microwaves to the army to replace the Dragunov sniper rifles (SVD).

Currently, the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation and the Airborne Forces are mainly armed with different versions of the SVD - a modernized version of the classic Dragunov rifle (SVDM), a modification with a folding stock (SVDS) and a large-caliber version (SVDK).

It is worth noting that the appearance in Russia of new sniper rifles did not go unnoticed by the Western expert community.

So, the American military-political magazine The National Interest has released several materials on microwaves.

“From the design point of view, the microwave is a very modern rifle compared to the SVD.

In many ways, it is similar to the typical Western semi-automatic precision rifle.

The old wooden fittings were replaced by a modern adjustable buttstock and a freely suspended forearm, ”the authors of the publication note.

Experts from The National Interest emphasize that "Microwave is a necessary upgrade for the Russian armed forces and paramilitaries."

Weapon progress

The named characteristics of the new rifle allow us to say that the microwave meets all the requirements for modern sniper weapons and surpasses its predecessors, said Alexander Butyrin, a columnist for the Firing Line magazine, in an interview with RT.

“The Chukavin rifle, taking into account modern trends and requests from military personnel for weapons, meets all the requirements and surpasses the Dragunov sniper rifle.

Improved ergonomics, a buttstock, devices for silent shooting - all this was not enough in the SVD.

For example, it is impossible to install a silencer on the SVD, and sometimes it is necessary for the sniper to work, so that it is more difficult to determine from which direction the fire is being fired, ”the expert said.

Alexander Butyrin also positively assessed the fact that microwaves with other types of new weapons are already in the special operation zone.

“Any new weapon must be tested and tested directly in the troops and directly in combat conditions.

A special military operation creates ideal conditions for testing a new type of weapon.

This will only play a positive role in the further development of the weapon and speed up the process of its widespread adoption directly among the troops, ”the RT interlocutor emphasized.

In turn, candidate of military sciences Sergei Suvorov, in an interview with RT, noted that the characteristics and features of a particular sniper rifle differ depending on the tasks that its operator must solve.

“There is a sniper in a motorized rifle squad armed with a Dragunov rifle, and there is a sniper in a special forces unit or other special structures that use specific weapons, such as silent Vintorez sniper rifles (VSS).

The microwave will replace the Dragunov rifle, the squad sniper's weapon.

The final accuracy and accuracy will depend on whose hands this rifle will be in, ”the expert noted.

The Dragunov sniper rifle has been a good weapon for a long time, but the time has come to replace it, Alexander Butyrin added.

“There is such a thing as morally obsolete.

The SVD has a long history - it showed itself well in Afghanistan, in conflicts in Chechnya, not only in the RF Armed Forces, but also in the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

But technology does not stand still, everything is developing, from the materials used in weapons to various special tools, such as a silencer, an optical sight, and so on.

Of course, at a certain point it’s time to make a complete replacement of weapons, and the microwave is coming into the army for the role of a new sniper rifle, ”concluded the interlocutor of RT.
