Japan deploys a missile defense unit near Taiwan

The Jiji news agency reported that the Japanese Ministry of Defense will deploy a surface-to-air missile defense unit on Yonaguni Island, in the far west of the country, near Taiwan.

The agency quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Takeshi Aoki as saying that the deployment of the missile defense unit comes within the framework of expanding a camp of the Ground Self-Defense Forces on Yonaguni Island, which is part of Okinawa Prefecture, to strengthen the defense of the islands located in the southwest of the country.

Earlier this month, Japan unveiled its largest military build-up since World War II with a $320 billion plan to buy missiles capable of reaching China, as regional tensions mount and fears that Russia's war on Ukraine could turn into a broader one. .
