No, the French are not the only ones facing a rail strike this holiday season.

In Portugal, hundreds of trains have been canceled since Friday due to a strike by railway workers which continues on Monday to demand a purchasing power bonus to cope with soaring prices.

On Monday, of the 427 trains scheduled until 10 a.m., 278 were canceled, according to a report from Portuguese railways.

A minimum service, corresponding to 25% of scheduled trains, has however made it possible to limit the impact of this movement.

Since the first day of walkout Friday, this strike has already resulted in the removal of more than 1,100 trains.

This movement of railway workers will have an impact on rail traffic the "days preceding and following the strike periods", as well as on January 1st.

A rate of “nearly 80%” of strikers

"We are aware that it is impossible to compensate for the loss of purchasing power", but "we are asking for a bonus that can help us cope" with the rise in prices this year, explained on television Antonio Pereira, head of the Independent Railway Workers' Union (SINFB), one of the eight organizations to have called for this mobilization.

According to the trade unionist, who does not rule out new movements next year, the rate of strikers rose to "nearly 80%" on Monday.

In addition to railway workers, other sectors are also demanding wage increases.

Employees of call centers or distribution and commerce also observed strike days over the Christmas weekend.

“Inflation has reached levels not seen for three decades,” acknowledged Antonio Costa on Sunday evening in his Christmas message broadcast on television.

The Socialist Prime Minister has pledged to do everything possible to continue to support households and the economy.
