A practice that fits into a current complicated economic context.

With the main objective of putting money aside and financing the end of year celebrations, the French will reinject 336 million euros into the economy after the holidays.

The concept emerged nearly 20 years ago.

It has continued to grow in recent years.

Increasingly simple, with the exponential development of Internet use, the resale of Christmas gifts just after the holidays is also increasingly accepted by the French.

No more need to move to a physical place.

Items are sent directly to their buyers.

The economic crisis and ecological issues are no strangers to this phenomenon.

This year, more particularly, the rise in prices linked to inflation risks impacting the budget of consumers, on the one hand, but also encouraging them to earn money by reselling superfluous objects.

The amount of money thus reinjected into the circular economy is considerable, amounting to several hundred million euros.

1.2 gifts that are not liked, on average

The latest video game on the brand new console was released a few days ago?

Has it met with phenomenal success?

Be careful, by buying it for your nephew, you take the risk that a member of the family had the same idea as you.

This little bracelet is so cute, but you didn't know your niece was allergic to certain metals?

Perfect, the sweater for Granny, but what size is she again?

Many are the reasons that make a gift, offered with pleasure, an object of disappointment for those who receive it.

Misfires are unfortunately common at Christmas.

As the saying goes, “it can happen to anyone”.

The proof: according to the Kantar 2022 study carried out for eBay, the French plan to buy 9 gifts for an average budget of 242 euros.

Among them, 1.2 won't make anyone happy,

that is a total of 50 million present who will not be happy this year.

A question of generation, perhaps?

If the youngest are generally offered at least 2 gifts that do not suit them, people aged 45 or over receive less than one.

As for the regions, Ile-de-France residents are also the most disappointed with, on average, 2.2 gifts that they do not like.

Nearly 3 million new ads between December 25 and January 3

Result: the e-commerce platform eBay expects around 3 million new ads to be posted between Christmas and early January, including 300,000 by December 25.

Smartphones, game consoles, books, clothes or toys are the main products that will seek takers on the web.

But this process is, without a doubt, a gesture for the planet.

Often new and still in packaging, these objects will be offered a second life and a longer useful life, for a price reduced by 30% on average.

The balances before the hour, in a way.

Save money and do a good deed

Resale is also profitable for the seller, especially in the current inflationary environment.

The study carried out by Kantar for eBay highlights, among the French, a strong desire to save: the money received from the resale of gifts is generally saved (43%) or used to pay Christmas bills (27% ).

A profit of 50 euros on average, which can also be used to buy something else (31%).

For just over a third of French people (37%), the resale of gifts is also encouraged if it is intended to do a good deed for an association such as Cékedubonheur, for example.

From December 25 to January 16 and for the 4th consecutive year, eBay will donate 1 euro to this association for each gift put up for sale with the hashtag #CKDB.

Chaired by Hélène Sy, Cékedubonheur supports hospitalized children to improve their daily lives, by offering them shows, concerts and outings to amusement parks.
