The former diplomat died at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
Frattini was Italian Foreign Minister in the government of Silvio Berlusconi from 2002 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2011.
Berlusconi was one of the first to express condolences on the death of the former minister.
“He was a true servant of the state, I will miss him,” the politician said.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping on the death of former President of the People's Republic of China Jiang Zemin.
