It happened a few weeks ago, in a private meeting with directors of a large Catalan business group.

When Alberto Núñez Feijóo finished his speech on the political situation in

Catalonia

, one of them approached him and congratulated him on what he considered his "best" address on the subject.

And he said, "Why don't you say this in public?"

Those who know him agree that the president of the PP moves well in the territorial discourse of the so-called "periphery" of

Spain

.

He enjoys insisting on his idea of a "constitutional Catalanism" (which is not the same, not even remotely, as a "Catalan constitutionalism").

"He knows it very well and he seems convinced," explains that same counselor.

The leader of the PP wants to bring positions closer to Catalan civil society because, as José María Aznar always warns, without a good result in Catalonia, Spain cannot be governed.

Another good example was, shortly before that meeting, the lunch that Feijóo shared with the leaders of

Pimec

, the main employers' association for Catalan SMEs.

When its president,

Antoni Cañete

, told him how he won the candidacy promoted by the

ANC

(battering ram of independence), and with 83% of the votes, Feijóo blurted out: "You are my hero!"

That is what the

popular

leader in Catalonia aspires to, to break the wall of independence, to occupy a large part of the broad space of the electorate that Ciudadanos conquered and that has now fundamentally tilted towards the PSC.

For that, his strategy will involve investing in the local elections in Catalonia, with a recurring presence and a highly marked personal role.

In the direction of Genoa they are very clear: "He is the best candidate in history so that the Catalans do not see in the PP an enemy of Catalonia."

"Deep down, he will be the candidate, he will go to Catalonia a lot," they reveal.

"Decentralization, Catalanism, autonomy, differentiated management of the territories... Feijóo does not have such an arid role for Catalonia as the previous" leaders of the Popular Party, explains a national leader of the party.

"Feijóo arouses interest in Catalonia," he adds, referring to his interventions before the economic power of this autonomy, which he surprised with his appeal to "Catalanism."

«Sánchez is going to provide feedback to the independentistas so that the tension is maintained, but we are going to appeal to the pragmatism of the Catalans.

The key is to never play with fire again.

We want the companies to return” that fled with the

process

, and for that a change of focus is needed, judge official PP sources.

"The majority takes stock and prioritizes the crisis over independence."

In this sense, "Feijóo handles a more pragmatic than dogmatic discourse, and that fits with a majority that is now looking for management and pragmatism," they develop.

"And it has social democratic policies," they presume, such as the deflation of the personal income tax rate for those who earn less than 40,000 euros, or a mortgage check for low incomes.

And that could be worth it to attract PSC voters who are dissatisfied with the latest penal movements of Pedro Sánchez.

The parliamentary majority that supports the Government has repealed the crime of sedition and has lowered the penalties for embezzlement without personal enrichment.

These are two changes tailored to the independence leaders convicted of corruption and for trying to make Catalonia independent from the rest of Spain in 2017. They were two ERC demands.

Feijóo will "fight" insistently against what he calls the "author's Penal Code", he maintains in Genoa.

The president of the PP has a different territorial discourse from that of Pablo Casado.

In fact, within his party he has promised to "decentralize" decisions.

This desire to promote the heritage of each autonomy has earned him criticism from Vox, which considers him the Galician PNV.

In other words, a nationalist.

He will also denounce in Catalonia that, in his opinion, Sánchez is "heading" towards a referendum on self-determination, or that it be taken as such.

That is why he will appeal to the refuge vote of the constitutionalists.

This is what he himself said in his last interview with this newspaper: "We must move towards the Catalan constitutionalist project, it is an orphan space at this time that the PSC has abandoned, it needs a political reference and I am in a position to build it with all my generosity" .

"We are in an unprecedented situation, with a government that has no limits and with a president who lacks the most elementary senses of State," he added.

Four possible candidates for Barcelona

The PP continues without defoliating the daisy in Barcelona.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo has four possible candidates in mind for Barcelona.

Two are from the party and two are not.

His environment does not release a garment on the latter two, but Genoa's favorite internal options are the former Minister of Health Dolors Montserrat and the former leader of the PPC Daniel Sirera.

Another of the names that is on the table as a possible mayor is that of Fernando Sánchez-Costa, former deputy of the PP in Parliament and former president of the Catalan Civil Society entity.

The name of the former leader of Ciudadanos Lorena Roldán also came to the fore.

Genoa is studying "what people can join in that project and what platform."

Can the PP compete in Catalonia on a platform with other brands and with civil society?

The answer is yes.

Although he will not give up his initials, as Feijóo himself promised.

"We have to experiment to see what possibility we have in Catalonia of building a constitutionalist space" and "the PP should be in a position to do so with other brands," he added.

The weakness of Cs gives the PP the opportunity to lead this "political tool for all those who feel Catalan and Spanish, Spanish and Catalan."

Another of the important names of the PP in the municipal elections on May 28, 2023 will be the candidate of Castelldefels, Manuel Reyes, who holds the position of provincial president.
