Due to the SNCF controllers' strike, many French people will take the car this Saturday to join their families for Christmas Eve.

At the microphone of Europe 1, Fabienne Buccio, prefect of the New Aquitaine region, announces that a reinforcement of road checks will be carried out "so that the party goes well".

On this Saturday, December 24, gendarmes and police will not play Santa Claus.

Telephone while driving, blood alcohol level, speed, the police do not provide any gift to motorists who are preparing to travel the roads this Saturday, New Year's Eve.

A traffic which could well prove to be even denser than usual due to the strike of the SNCF controllers.

- Christmas weekend: between the SNCF strike and the crowds on the roads, the police are increasing the checks

At the microphone of Europe 1, Fabienne Buccio, prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region expects to record significant traffic flows and has requested a strengthening of road checks.

"Traditionally, already, this time of year, we know, is more accident-prone. This year, if we take the Gironde, we are already at 84 dead on the road", she laments.

Several hundred police forces mobilized

A figure up from last year.

"Last year we were only at 71, even if each death is one death too many".

The prefect therefore calls on the population to exercise restraint at the wheel.

"It is really necessary that in this period, everyone returns to their responsibilities", she insists, while promising her fellow citizens "blue on the road" during this Christmas weekend.

"People will be checked, but it's for their own good and for the party to go well," says Fabienne Buccio.

The prefer confirms "reinforcements" and figures at "several hundred" the number of police and gendarmes, deployed throughout the department of Gironde.
