What's happening in the Dordogne?

In recent months, several hunting dogs have died suddenly for an unknown reason.

A hunter based in Villefranche-du-Périgord lost five of his animals in early November.

While he was participating in a wild boar hunt, his dogs “bitten” a wild boar which “was about thirty kilos”, he tells France Bleu Périgord.

The dogs then experienced the same symptoms, including severe itching.

They finally died a few days later.

Examinations have been launched to determine the exact cause of their death.

In total, four cases are being analyzed throughout the department.

If the results are not yet known, the Dordogne prefecture thinks it could be an animal disease called Aujeszky's disease.

This infectious disease, which is not transmissible to humans, mainly affects wild boars and pigs and is similar to rabies.

Affected animals die very quickly after the first symptoms appear.

In order to reduce the risk of contamination, it is recommended that hunters not let their dogs bite wild boars during a hunting trip.
