During the last three weeks, there has been an increased spread of infection in Västerbotten.

SLU's measurements of waste water show that Umeå had the country's highest spread of influenza during December.

The statistics also show that the spread of covid-19 is increasing significantly.

The fact that there are several viruses in circulation means that some are ill for a long time.

First you get an infection, then you are exposed to something else and get infected again.

- Some get extra sick and it takes longer to recover, says Gunilla Persson.

Fears peak in January

At the same time, Region Västerbotten, just like the Public Health Authority, fears that the spread of infection will peak in January, when many people will meet during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

- You have to think twice about the big family reunions.

If you risk infecting others, you should stay away, says Gunilla Persson.

"Could be worse"

The health and medical services within the region are informed that the situation may thus worsen in January, both in terms of sickness absence among the staff and the pressure on care.

- Everyone is aware that it can get worse.

At the same time, there is already a heavy burden on healthcare, for example, planned operations have been cancelled, says Gunilla Persson.
