Nablus

- 6 goals scored by the Palestinian youth Ahmed Atef Daraghmeh this year made him a champion in the Palestinian Football League.

However, a counter-target came from an Israeli sniper's rifle, which surprised him in clashes that took place in the city of Nablus and its environs.

Kill him as a martyr.

Shortly after midnight last night, large forces of the Israeli occupation army stormed the eastern region of the city of Nablus in the West Bank, to secure the access of dozens of settlers to the "Joseph's Tomb" and to perform religious rituals in it.

This tomb belongs to one of the righteous Palestinian sheikhs, while the settlers claim that it belongs to the Prophet Joseph, peace be upon him.

After they deployed in several areas east of the city, the occupation soldiers began firing at dozens of Palestinian youths who wanted to stop the intrusion.

During clashes that lasted for several hours, the young man, Ahmed Daraghmeh, was wounded by a live explosive bullet in his stomach, killing him before he arrived at the hospital.

While local sources said that he was killed in an armed clash with the occupation.

During the confrontations, the occupation wounded 6 Palestinians with live bullets, two of them in serious condition, in addition to injuring more than 30 others with shrapnel and tear gas suffocation.

The occupation forces impeded the ambulance crew during its attempts to provide the rescue of the young man Daraghmeh after he was injured, and closed the perimeter of the place with dirt mounds to protect the settlers, while its snipers climbed the roofs of the houses surrounding Joseph's tomb.

From a resistant family

Ahmed Daraghmeh (23 years) is a resident of the city of Tubas in the northern West Bank, where he was born and raised, and in its schools he received his basic and secondary education, where he graduated in the literary branch in 2018 and joined the Faculty of Physical Education at Al-Quds Open University. After his graduation, he preferred to help his father by working with him in one of the date factories in The Palestinian Jordan Valley.

The martyr belongs to a struggling Palestinian family. His father, the former prisoner Atef Daraghmeh, was arrested for 15 years in the Israeli occupation prisons, during which he was subjected to harsh investigation and torture.

The occupation also arrested Ammar Daraghmeh (the uncle of the martyr) twice, and he spent 8 years in prison.

Ahmed is the younger brother of the prisoner Adham Daraghmeh (26 years old), who has been in Israeli prisons for a year, and he was previously imprisoned for about 3 years as well.

He grew up with a passion for football

From his city of Tubas, Ahmed Daraghmeh came at night to defend the city of Nablus and was martyred over its wealth, after he was distinguished by his passion for football, which he played professionally from a young age, so he joined the Tubas club in the junior league, to rise later to the professional league.

Ahmed received offers from various teams, especially the “Balata Youth Club” in Nablus and the “Tulkarem Cultural Club”, which are two of the most prominent football clubs in the Palestinian League.

Daraghmeh joined the "Tulkarem Cultural Club" in the last season, and played several matches, during which he scored 6 goals.

However, being targeted by an Israeli sniper with a bullet in the abdomen "caused huge lacerations and led to his immediate death," according to his uncle, Bashar Daraghmeh.

his father's eyes

His uncle tells Al-Jazeera Net that he was loved by everyone and was decent, and from a young age he loved football and became a professional, and he also loved horse riding, and in the last league he became known among the sports masses.

He is also known for his religious commitment and prayers in the mosque.

His uncle says that Ahmed was known to recite Al-Fatihah on the soul of the martyrs with every goal he scored.

In front of his body in Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, his father stood praying for him, "May God be pleased with you, Father," and said, "Ahmed Oyouni." As for his mother, she embraced him in a difficult state of pain.

"The Crosshair"

The Tulkarem Cultural Club mourned the martyr and said that he was one of its professional players. The Palestinian Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (a governmental body) also mourned him, saying that he was one of the most prominent players in the Palestinian League.

Palestinian athletes and activists launched hashtags for the martyr, such as "#the martyr_scorer and #the_clash_scorer."

And the Palestinian sports commentator, Khalil Jadallah, wrote on his Facebook page, “The commentators say: “We were honored to comment on the World Cup final, or we were honored to comment on a match in which Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, etc. were present. As for you, Ahmed, you have given us greater honor. We will tell people, “I commented.” On a goal scored by the legend, scored by the martyr, the fighter, the hero, Ahmed Atef Daraghmeh.”

Jadallah talked about the special touch with which Ahmed Daraghmeh used to score his distinguished goals.

"Our condolences are that you passed away as a fighter, a hero as we knew you," he said.

As for the activist Fares Bilalo, he wrote, "The Palestinian shooter was killed by an Israeli sniper a short while ago in Nablus."

While activist Allam Dweikat wrote, "Israeli bullets stopped his soccer career."

Activist Fakhr Al-Rantissi commented, "The martyr, the top scorer, Ahmed Atef, chose to participate in a different kind of World Cup, in which only men can enter. He scored his goals with blood. He reached the final and won the highest award, and was crowned on the throne of the championship, holding his weapon."

Even Ahmed himself did not miss to present himself as a martyr a few days before his martyrdom, so he chose to crown the cover of his Facebook page with a dramatic image of young men carrying a shrouded martyr and raising him up.

He commented on his account on the Instagram platform, saying, "I am following in the footsteps of the martyrs, and if my feet are late, my soul is advanced."

Hundreds of martyred athletes

Ahmad Daraghmeh joins about 700 Palestinians who were sports activists or players in local clubs, who were killed by the Israeli occupation in the decades after the 1967 occupation, according to the Palestinian sports website Quds Sport.

Jibril Rajoub, head of the Palestinian Football Association, described his killing as a "new crime" that "adds to the ongoing series of crimes against sports and Palestinian athletes in particular, and the Palestinian people in general."

A statement by the Palestinian Federation said that the killing of Daraghmeh violates all international, sports and humanitarian charters and laws, and comes in light of the world's celebration of the end of the World Cup, "which confirms the certainty of the occupation that it has escaped any deterrent penalties, as if it is above the law."
