Since June 2021, Crit'Air 5 and Crit'Air 4 vehicles are no longer allowed to circulate throughout Paris.

But does this ban give rise to penalties, and if so, how high?

According to figures communicated to

20 Minutes

by the police headquarters, 1,380 fines were issued between July 2021 and October 2022 inclusive in Paris and in the inner suburbs.

The fines mainly concern motor vehicles circulating in the ZFEs, the Low Emission Zones, introduced in 2015 to penalize vehicles that pollute too much.

During this entire period, 701 offenses were established for this reason.

The second largest wave of offenses concerns fines for driving a motor vehicle without a compliant certificate within the perimeter of the traffic restrictions imposed in the event of air pollution.

Clearly, during pollution peaks, only certain vehicles with an appropriate vignette can be authorized to circulate.

This is what happened last June.

As such, 531 fines were set during these two years.

Twice as many fines in 2022

The other offenses concern vehicles driving with a certificate but in an area that is not reserved for them (113 fines) or goods transport vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes driving with or without a compliant certificate (35 fines).

Note that the rate of all fines has increased significantly in 2022, from an average of 47 fines per month in 2021 to around 109 in 2022.

Since June 2021 and the transition to the second stage, private vehicles (cars or two-wheelers) and light commercial vehicles, classified Crit'Air 4, 5 and unclassified can no longer circulate in a wide perimeter, located inside the A86, which forms a wide loop around Paris, weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except public holidays for cars, light commercial vehicles and two-wheelers;

and every day on the same schedules for trucks, buses and coaches.

Specifically, these are Euro 1, 2 or 3 diesel vehicles, registered before December 31, 2005, and petrol vehicles registered before December 31, 1996.

Offenders are liable to a fine of 135 euros for heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches and 68 euros for other categories of vehicles.

The next step, which consists of limiting the circulation of the most polluting vehicles Crit'Air 3, inside the A86 motorway, will not take place before July 2023.
