The rupture of a drinking water pipe in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Val-de-Marne) overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday caused major flooding.

Several streets were submerged in the area between the Pont de Créteil and Avenue Noël.

The City, quoted by France 3 Paris Ile-de-France, indicated that "thousands of cubic meters of water" had spilled "over about a kilometer".

Many cellars and basements were flooded.

For safety, the gas supply has been interrupted.

However, the drinking water network has not been closed everywhere.

Relief officials may have to cut the power for a few hours on Wednesday.

The Veolia company, in charge of water distribution, and the firefighters are hard at work to allow the situation to return to normal.

Pumps have been activated to evacuate water from the streets, indicates Actu Val-de-Marne.

The flooding caused road subsidence.

Traffic was halted throughout the affected area.

The reasons why the pipe gave way were not immediately disclosed.
