About half an hour later, supporters smashed a second-floor window and insurgents flooded into the building.

A crowd also broke through the main doors of the building where

is located and some then moved to the adjacent

rotunda

Protesters storm the US Congress

The police then barricaded the main doors to

the plenary hall of the House of Representatives

They drew their weapons to protect the members of the plenary chamber as the crowd gathered outside the door.

At approximately 20:40 Swedish time, members of the House of Representatives were given gas masks and evacuated from the plenary hall through the lower floors of the parliament building.

Shortly afterwards, insurgents broke into the plenary hall.

Shortly thereafter, supporters also roamed freely in

the Senate chamber

and also entered the gallery upstairs.

Later in the afternoon, rioters broke into the

speaker

's office

used by Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives.

The rioters were in and around the parliament building for several hours until they were taken away by the police.

The National Guard in the states of the District of Columbia and Virginia were called to the scene to prevent Trump supporters from re-entering the building.

Many police officers patrolled the area until well into the night.

The state's mayor Muriel Bowser issued a curfew on the same day from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following day local time.

The state of exception was valid for the next two weeks.
