BEIJING, December 20 (Xinhua) According to Sky News, the Bank of England announced on the 20th the first batch of banknotes bearing the portrait of King Charles.

According to reports, the denominations of the new banknotes announced that day are £5, £10, £20 and £50.

The portrait of King Charles is printed on the obverse of the banknote and in the security relief in the transparent window.

Additionally, there are no other changes to the current design.

According to Agence France-Presse, the portrait of King Charles on the new banknote is taken from a photograph owned by the royal family and published in 2013.

The new banknote design was "only finalized in the last few months" and approved by the king.

It is reported that the new banknotes are expected to enter circulation in mid-2024.

Notes featuring Queen Elizabeth and King Charles will be issued at the same time.

Queen Elizabeth first appeared on Bank of England notes in 1960.

"This is an important moment as King Charles is the second monarch to appear on our banknotes," Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement.

"People will be able to use these new banknotes in 2024, when they start to circulate in the market."

The Bank of England is understood to have no intention of withdrawing the Queen Elizabeth notes until they wear out, so both types of notes will remain in circulation for several years.

The Royal Mint has released the first coins featuring King Charles' silhouette, which went into circulation earlier this month.

The image of King Charles first appeared on the 50p coin, with the king's portrait facing left, in accordance with past tradition, and keeping the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth of the previous monarch in the opposite direction.
