Earlier, the coordinator of strategic communications of the National Security Council, John Kirby, said that Washington recognizes the right of Kyiv to strike at Crimea, since it considers the peninsula to be Ukrainian territory.

“Such a cynical and hostile position of the United States on Crimea will come back to haunt them,” Sheremet told RIA Novosti.

The deputy stressed that Russia is ready to firmly suppress all attempts at provocations against Crimea.

Sheremet also called Kirby's statement a challenge for Russia to protect the security of its territories.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that the United States does not prohibit Kyiv from using American weapons against Crimea.

The Kremlin noted that Crimea is an integral part of Russia and claims to Russian territory will receive a proper response.

Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014: the majority of residents voted for reunification with Russia.
