Representatives of the US Congress intend to vote, next Monday, to recommend criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, including rebellion, in the case of his supporters storming Congress in early 2021.

Politico news website reported that a congressional subcommittee will recommend at least three charges against Trump.

This committee was working on evaluating possible criminal referrals related to the riots on January 6, 2021, when "Trumpists" (Trump supporters) stormed Congressional headquarters in an attempt to prevent the ratification of the results of the presidential elections that he lost to his rival, current President Joe Biden.

And the American news site quoted two people familiar with the committee's report as saying that the charges are rebellion, obstruction of official procedures, and conspiracy to deceive the government.

The House Committee investigating the Capitol riot is scheduled to hold its final plenary meeting on Monday at 1pm UTC, issuing its final report two days later.

Members of this committee will vote - during Monday's meeting - on whether to refer any people with possible criminal charges.

Just a recommendation

The committee does not have the power to file charges, but it can make a recommendation to the Department of Justice, which appointed a special counsel to look into Trump's role in the Capitol riots, and his attempts to cancel the presidential elections won by Democrat Biden in 2020.

Trump was subpoenaed by the House Committee earlier, but he declined to testify.

The US authorities arrested hundreds of people in this case for their involvement in storming the Capitol, and two members - belonging to a far-right militia - were convicted of sedition.
