Moscow welcomes Turkey's call to establish a tripartite mechanism for diplomacy with Syria

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said today that his country welcomes the initiative of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to hold a tripartite summit between Russia, Turkey and Syria.

"We always welcome issues related to the normalization of relations between sovereign neighboring countries," Bogdanov told reporters in response to a question about Russia's position on the Turkish president's proposal, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

"It is necessary to know what Damascus thinks about this initiative, but such a position as Turkey has shown, we can only welcome it," said the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.

Bogdanov said that Syria's reaction to this initiative is not yet known.

The Turkish Anatolia news agency quoted Erdogan as saying: “I offered Putin a tripartite meeting between the leaders of Turkey, Russia and Syria, and he received the offer positively, and in this way we have started the series of meetings... We want to take a tripartite Turkish-Russian-Syrian step, and therefore we must First, holding meetings between the intelligence agencies, then the defense ministers, then the foreign ministers.

Erdogan had said earlier last month: "Things can return to normal with Syria in the next stage, as happened with Egypt, as there is no permanent rivalry in politics."
