  • Peru The coup that was suicide

The Latin American left breaks diplomatic barriers in its support for the coup leader Pedro Castillo.

Through a joint statement signed in Mexico City, the governments of

Mexico, Argentina, Colombia

and

Bolivia

have shown their "deep concern over the recent events that resulted in the removal and detention of Pedro Castillo, President of the Republic of Peru." .

A statement that has surprised the new Peruvian government, since it does not recognize the dismissal of Castillo and the succession by his vice president, Dina Boluarte, as established by the Constitution.

Last Wednesday, the ousted president unsuccessfully ordered the dissolution of Congress, the establishment of an emergency government, the implementation of a curfew, the arrest of the attorney general and the intervention of courts and public powers.

As he fled to the Mexican Embassy, where he was seeking asylum, he was detained by his own bodyguards.

"Castillo was the victim of undemocratic harassment to later be subjected to violative judicial treatment," denounced the governments allied with Castillo, who has had the political sponsorship of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Mexican president, for months.

Peruvian prosecutors had six open investigations against Castillo, whom they considered the leader of a criminal group that was dedicated to adding bribes and commissions from state contracts and other businesses.

Part of his family,

some close collaborators and corrupt deputies

were part of this group.

"Our governments call on all the actors involved to prioritize the citizen will that was pronounced at the polls. It is the way to interpret the scope and meaning of the notion of democracy included in the Inter-American System of Human Rights. We urge those who make up the institutions to refrain from reversing the popular will expressed with free suffrage," the signatories preached in the statement.

President Boluarte, ignored by the four governments in the region, has presented a proposal to bring forward the general elections (presidential and parliamentary) to April 2024, although Parliament is also considering a roadmap for them to be carried out next year.

"We request that the authorities fully respect the human rights of President Pedro Castillo and that he be guaranteed judicial protection," they sentenced.

Congress

has lifted the presidential immunity

in response to the constitutional complaint filed by the Attorney General,

Patricia Benavides, for

the crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public peace.
