When Wirecard was founded in Munich in 1999, they worked with payment solutions for porn sites and online casinos.

But in the 2010s they expanded into other industries, and the development went straight up.

In 2018, Wirecard was listed on the German stock market index DAX, officially making it one of Germany's 30 most valuable companies on the stock market.

But in the summer of 2020, after a series of revelations and alarms from anonymous whistleblowers, Wirecard admitted that around two billion euros were missing from the company's books.

Described as Germany's biggest post-war fraud scandal, thousands of investors and small savers lost their money.

Three people from Wirecard's former management are now charged with eco-crimes.

According to the Reuters news agency, the former CEO faces up to 15 years in prison, but denies all criminal charges.

People in Wirecard's management have been sought by the documentary makers of Wirecard: The Men Who Conned Germany but declined to comment or could not be reached.
