India.. A landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Modi, in the legislative elections in Gujarat

Today, Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, won a landslide victory in the legislative assembly elections in his home state, Gujarat.

Modi launched a broad electoral campaign in the state, and the resounding victory was considered a strong boost for him and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2024 in the world's largest democracy.

Today, the votes were counted in the elections that took place in two rounds, on the first and fifth of this month of December, and the results of the Election Commission showed that the Bharatiya Janata Party won 5.52% of the votes and more than 150 seats out of 182 in the state legislature.

According to the latest data from the Election Commission, its closest rival, the main opposition Indian National Congress party, won just 17 seats with 3.27% of the vote.

The provincial legislature elections are seen as a test of the mood of voters in India, which has a population of 4.1 billion.

The trends show that Modi remains very popular, but the BJP may experience headwinds in some areas in 2024.

In a speech to party staff at the Bharatiya Janata headquarters in Delhi, Modi thanked the citizens of Gujarat for giving the party its seventh consecutive victory there, and said, "You have broken all records ... you are writing history."

Modi said the win reflected the growing public support for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its development-oriented policy, and anger at corruption and family politics pursued by some parties.

"The youth of India have tested and given their judgment on our work," Modi said. "They want development-oriented policies, not politics of caste, family and corruption."

Although Gujarat is one of the largest Indian states in economic terms, it lags behind in human development indicators such as neonatal and maternal mortality rates.

Modi served as chief minister of Gujarat state before becoming prime minister of India.

Voters in Gujarat, which like most of India is predominantly Hindu, has voted for the BJP in every election since 2002.

While the National Congress Party performed poorly in the state, it defeated the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, where the elections were also held.
