In the past hours, social networks in Lebanon have spread a state of extreme anger after circulating a picture of a citizen carrying the corpse of his infant on foot.

According to the image, which was widely circulated, the bereaved father appeared carrying his infant child, wrapped in a piece of cloth, after death left him in a hospital in Akkar (north).

The picture was attached to a comment stating that the administration of the Khalaf Al Habtoor-Harrar Hospital refused to hand over the body of his infant until after he left his car keys to pay the $2,400 hospitalization bill, as he could only pay $400.

The picture that shook the feelings of thousands of Lebanese reflected the reality of the economic and social situation, amid the exacerbation of the living and financial crisis in the country since 2019.

In this context, the father of the child, Ahmed Hussein Al-Baarini, confirmed - in a special video of the Sanad Agency for Monitoring and Verification on Al-Jazeera Network - that he had received a call from Habtoor Hospital - Al-Harar Al-Akaria and told him of the death of his infant son, "after he spent 25 days in the incubator."

And he stressed in the context of his speech that after his arrival at the hospital, he entered "the room of the person in charge of the accounting department" to ask him for an amount of "2,400 dollars."

He explained, "After the department official saw that I could not pay the money, she asked me to leave the car key that I had with me, which belonged to my sister's son, as a mortgage to the hospital."

In the video, he continued, "I took the car key after I learned that its price was approximately two thousand dollars, so I left the key and walked back with my son's body."

The hospital administration confirmed to a local newspaper (Nidaa Al-Watan) that, as soon as it became aware of the matter, it called the father twice and asked him to come to collect his car, and denounced what happened, stressing that it was not her custom, as she often stood by the people of the area, and if the employee had informed the administration about the matter, she would not have agreed. It has never been, and it has already been referred to the Disciplinary Board to take the appropriate decision.
