The United Kingdom witnessed more deaths due to excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages in 2021 than in any previous year, the British Statistics Agency announced yesterday, Thursday.

The agency indicated that this is likely due to the Corona (Covid-19) pandemic, during which extravagant people consumed alcoholic beverages more than they consumed in previous years.

And 9,641 deaths in the UK can be directly linked to alcohol, a quarter more than the number of deaths in 2019 before the pandemic.

After death rates were stable for a period of years, they rose sharply in 2020 and again by 7.4% in 2021.

The researchers expected this, as a study of the Sheffield community in the summer showed that people who already consumed large quantities of alcohol became more heavy drinkers during the period of closure and restrictions on social contact.

"These statistics are shocking, and every number hides an individual family tragedy," said Karen Tyrell, head of the Drinkaware charity.
