More than one in five people are or have been victims of workplace violence and harassment, says the International Labor Organization.

This is the first time that the ILO has conducted a survey of this magnitude on the subject.

Unsurprisingly, women, young people, employees and migrants are more likely to be among the victims.

Victims very often silent for fear of repercussions on their position.

The report distinguishes several forms of violence.

The most common, also the most invisible, is psychological violence, reports our correspondent in Geneva,

Jérémie Lanche.

One in five workers around the world has been confronted with it at one time or another in their career.

Much more than physical violence, it affects one in ten workers.

Men are much more exposed to it, unlike violence and sexual harassment, which primarily concerns women.

But we still need to know that barely half of the victims of violence at work talk about their suffering to their colleagues or relatives, explains the Deputy Director of the ILO, Manuela Tomei: "

Victims do not talk because that they consider that it is useless, or that it will tarnish their reputation.

And it's interesting to see that men are less likely to admit that they have suffered violence than women.

It shows that the subject is still taboo.

In many countries, there is not really a law against it.

And when there are, people don't believe that she will protect them

”.

About a third of victims said they had been subjected to more than one form of violence and harassment, and 6.3% of victims had faced all three forms (physical, psychological and sexual) of this phenomenon during their lifetime. professional.

Are the rich countries more affected by the phenomenon?

This survey was carried out among 75,000 people in 121 countries, mainly by telephone.

The conversations were conducted in a way that overcomes differing perceptions of what constitutes violence or harassment around the world.

In China, where the authorization of the public authorities was necessary, certain questions could not be asked, elsewhere the authorities asked that they be adapted to “local cultural sensitivities”, explained a manager of Gallup during the point Press.

As is often the case with reports from the UN, we therefore do not know which countries are most concerned.

All we know is that rich countries report the most cases of harassment and violence at work.

This does not mean that the phenomenon is less elsewhere, just that the victims speak more easily in these countries.

They do so all the more easily when they are subjected to several forms of violence.
