Börje Salming's importance to Swedish ice hockey is unparalleled, and he also meant a lot to Sápmi.

He called himself half-Sámi and held the area around his home village of Čoalbmi close to his heart.

During Sunday, Börje Salming was celebrated both with his own street in Kiruna and a statue at the ice hotel in Jukaksjärvi.

Many gave speeches and told stories about the man Börje Salming.

"Strong as a bear"

One of them was the Sami writer Thomas Marainen, who first told anecdotes about his youth and then performed a specially written joik for his childhood friend.

- He was strong as a bear and a king on the ice, he says.
