The House of Councilors voted in favor of a resolution expressing concern over the human rights situation in China, including the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

The resolution was voted on at the plenary session of the House of Councillors, and was adopted with a majority of support from both the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito Party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Japan Restoration Party, the Communist Party, and the Democratic Party for the People.

Regarding the human rights situation in China, the resolution states, "In recent years, the international community has expressed serious concerns about violations of religious freedom and forced imprisonment in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and the Tibet Autonomous Region."

In addition, with the Chinese government in mind, it said, "We recognize that changing the status quo by force is a threat to the international community, and strongly urge the government of the relevant country to fulfill its accountability in a way that is acceptable to the international community."

Minister for Foreign Affairs Hayashi said, "Based on the intent of the resolution, we will continue to work closely with the international community and work steadily."

A similar resolution was adopted by the House of Representatives before the Beijing Olympics in February this year, but the House of Councilors adjusted the wording and adopted it on the 5th.
