Syria: A policeman was shot dead by outlaws in Suwayda

Today, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the death of a policeman as a result of an attempt by outlaws to storm the police headquarters in As-Suwayda governorate, in the south of the country.

The ministry said, in a statement it posted on its Facebook page, that "at 11:30 am, a group of outlaws, some of them carrying individual weapons, blocked the road with burning tires next to Al-Mashnaqa roundabout in As-Suwayda governorate."

She added that they went to the governorate building and fired shots indiscriminately, injuring an officer and a number of citizens present in the place. They entered the building by force of arms, destroyed office furniture and stole a large part of the building’s contents, including official documents, and set fire to the building and the cars near it. Then, they tried to storm the police command building, where they were confronted by the command guards, which led to the death of a policeman.

And she affirmed that she "will pursue the outlaws and take legal measures against anyone who tries to tamper with the security and stability of As-Suwayda governorate and the safety of its citizens."

Witnesses had said that dozens of demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the As-Suwayda Governorate (the Governmental Brigades) today and set fire to parts of the building amid a heavy exchange of fire.

State media said that dozens of "fugitives from justice" stormed the governorate's headquarters and burned files and official papers.

Today, the Syrian Observatory reported that one person was killed and seven others were wounded by security forces’ bullets in As-Suwayda governorate.

According to the observatory, "the city witnessed a great security tension, after protesters attacked the Saraya government building with stones."
