  • Big Characters Jerry Hall: Look at me but don't you dare look at me

There are more than half a dozen biographies of his father.

Of his eldest son, the man who now manages part of the powerful media empire, there was not a single one.

Until now.

Australian journalist Paddy Manning has been in charge of

shedding more light on Lachlan Murdoch, son of Australian media mogul

Rupert Murdoch, and the one chosen to establish himself at the top despite the intentions of his brothers to dethrone him.

At 51, Lachlan is something of an unknown compared to his father, always in his shadow.

Still, he is the CEO of Fox Corporation, Deputy Chairman of News Corporation, founder of investment firm Illyria Pty Limited, and CEO of Nova Entertainment.

He also has a fortune of around 4,000 million dollars,

according to the most recent list of the Australian Financial Review, with an important list of real estate properties.

In 2019 he bought a huge mansion in Bel-Air for 150 million dollars, a historical figure for California.

He has been married for 23 years to an Australian top model, Sarah O'Hare, and they have two sons and a daughter.

He was born in Wimbledon, London, in 1971, but grew up in Manhattan, coinciding with his father's purchase of the New York Post in 1976. Manning's unauthorized biography

paints him as a modern man, with tattoos, an adventurous spirit and character. affable.

In the background, the question of whether he will manage to consolidate himself on the throne -as his father's favorite to succeed him- or if the war with his brothers (James, Elizabeth and Prudence) will end up displacing him.

The title of the book,

The Successor: The High-Stakes Life of Lachlan Murdoch,

almost immediately brings to mind HBO's brilliant series

Succession,

which seems to be clearly inspired by the story of the Murdoch saga.

According to Manning, Lachlan's options are not very favorable.

"In a possible scenario, after Rupert has passed away and his shares are divided among the four adult children, the three on the other side of Lachlan could choose to regain control over all of Murdoch's businesses," the journalist says.

"It's fair to assume Lachlan will be fired the day Rupert dies."

It doesn't matter that he is the most experienced of the litter.

His unauthorized biographer ranks him a rung below his father in business, despite the notorious slip-ups he's had since he took over.

Famous was the operation in One.Tel, a telecommunications

startup

in which he invested together with his friend James Packer.

They lost $40 million.

The investment in Channel Ten, which he came to preside over, was also ruinous, with losses of around 150 million dollars, in addition to the blow to his reputation.

His goals in favor:

an investment of 10 million dollars in the real estate group REA Group

that today exceeds 3,000 million dollars and the purchase of an Indian cricket team, the Rajasthan Royals, whose value has also grown exponentially.

His 91-year-old father wanted him by his side from the first bars of his maturity.

At the age of 18, he brought him to Australia from New York to train for three months

at the

Daily Mirror.

Four years later he was appointed general manager of the group's Queensland newspapers, editor of the

Brisbane

Courier-Mail and

The Australian

a year later.

Later he went on to have a lot of power at Twentieth Century Fox studios and at Harper Collins.

Following the sale of 21st Century Fox to Disney in 2019, the company consolidated the rest of its assets under the Fox Corporation banner, with Rupert Murdoch at the helm and Lachlan as number two, including its many radio and television stations.

Now,

the eldest son could play a fundamental role in the merger of two colossi of the Murdoch empire, Fox and News Corp,

a media conglomerate that includes

The Wall Street Journal

and the

New York Post.

That is if he does not lose the complex game of chess that he has been playing with his brothers for years,

the most exciting plot of this peculiar family saga.
