This is a big step for self-employed farmers.

The National Assembly voted for a change in the calculation of their retirement pensions.

This would be based only on the best 25 years and not on their entire career.

The end of an injustice for the profession, welcomes the FNSEA.

For once, the change in the calculation of retirement pensions for self-employed farmers was adopted unanimously on Thursday in the National Assembly, despite the opposition of the majority.

From 2026, their best 25 years will be counted rather than their entire career.

A more favorable measure for the profession and which greatly relieves farmers.

Régis Jacobé, producer of beets and cereals in the Marne, had to have a little more than 1,000 euros in retirement.

But this law could change that.

"For me, that would correspond to a 17% increase in my theoretical retirement. It will be a little 200 euros more," rejoices the farmer.

Professional recognition

According to Luc Smessaert, cattle breeder and vice-president of the FNSEA, this measure puts an end to a great injustice.

“We absolutely had to correct this calculation of our pensions. We are going to erase the few years when there was a drought, frost… Because when we have our bad years, we have income that is close to zero, so we contribute very little,” he explains.

Beyond the law, this unanimous vote in the Assembly is a real symbol of recognition for farmers.

“Often, we have the feeling of being unwell or of being unloved,” says Régis Jacobé.

"The National Assembly tells us as a whole 'we like you farmers, and we listen to you'."

He hopes that this measure will help make the profession more attractive to young people.
