UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement on the same day, expressing deep sorrow over the death of Comrade Jiang Zemin.
The Security Council held a meeting on the morning of November 30, and Harold Ajman, the rotating chairman of the Security Council for the month and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, presided over the meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ajman expressed deep condolences on the passing of Jiang Zemin on behalf of the members of the Security Council.
Ajman said that the international community will remember Jiang Zemin's outstanding contributions to global peace, security and development, as well as his role in China's reform and opening up, modernization and economic development.
At Ajman's suggestion, all participants stood up and observed a minute's silence for Jiang Zemin's death.
Ajman then invited the representative of China to speak.
Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, thanked the Security Council for specially arranging the ceremony of silence.
Geng Shuang said that Comrade Jiang Zemin's death is an immeasurable loss to the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese government and the Chinese people.
He has made outstanding contributions to promoting the development and progress of the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and has also made important contributions to promoting the friendly and cooperative relations between China and other countries in the world.
The Security Council then voted to adopt a resolution on non-proliferation in accordance with the established meeting agenda.
When the representatives of Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Ireland, Norway, Albania and Ghana made explanatory speeches after the adoption of the resolution, they firstly expressed their condolences for the passing of Jiang Zemin and expressed condolences to the Chinese government and Jiang Zemin's family.
The Russian representative said that Jiang Zemin was an outstanding statesman who promoted China's great achievements in economic and social development and greatly enhanced China's international status.
The UAE representative said that Jiang Zemin's contribution to China's economic prosperity and stability will be forever remembered.
The representative of Ghana said that Jiang Zemin has made important contributions to China's progress and prosperity as well as global peace and development.
Earlier in the day, Guterres issued a statement expressing his deep sorrow for Jiang Zemin's death and, on behalf of the United Nations, extending sincere condolences to Jiang Zemin's family, the Chinese government and people.
The statement said that Jiang Zemin was a firm advocate of China's participation in international affairs. During his tenure, China made great economic progress and successfully joined the World Trade Organization.
