A security source told Al-Jazeera that gunmen opened fire on the Pakistani embassy in the center of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the assassination attempt that targeted the head of the mission, and Sharif demanded - in a tweet on Twitter - an immediate investigation and action against the perpetrators of this heinous act, as he described it.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said - in a statement - that its embassy compound in Kabul was attacked, mainly targeting the ambassador, according to the local newspaper, "Geo".

The statement indicated that the attack resulted in the serious injury of a Pakistani security guard, when he was trying to protect the ambassador.

The ministry added that the Pakistani government strongly condemns the assassination attempt and the attack on the embassy, ​​and calls for an immediate investigation into the incident.

For its part, the Afghan Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attempted shooting, and stressed that it would not allow any party to attempt to compromise the security of diplomatic missions.

The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan also strongly condemned the attack on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul.

The Pakistani newspaper "Geo" quoted unnamed sources as saying that the attack took place while the ambassador was taking a walk.
