A Palestinian welcome to the United Nations' decision to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian "Nakba".

Today, Thursday, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas welcomed the United Nations' decision to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba.

In a statement, the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Riyad Al-Maliki, appreciated "the large and inclusive vote in favor of four resolutions for Palestine in the special session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the issue and the Palestinian issue."

Al-Maliki highlighted the adoption of the United Nations resolutions, foremost of which is the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, considering it "an international recognition of the Palestinian tragedy that led to the displacement of our people and the transformation of more than half of them into refugees in the diaspora, and the other half under the oppression of an apartheid regime."

He believed that the countries' vote in favor of the resolutions "is evidence of the international consensus on the Palestinian issue, the right of the Palestinian people to live in freedom and dignity, their right to self-determination and independence for the State of Palestine, and the return of refugees."

According to the statement, 90 countries voted, 30 opposed and 47 abstained, on a resolution requesting celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian "Nakba", including a high-level event in the General Assembly Hall on May 15, 2023.

For its part, Hamas said, in a statement, that the aforementioned decision is "an international recognition of the tragedy of the Palestinian people, which led to their displacement from their land and homes, and the conversion of most of them into refugees in exile and diaspora."
