  • Interview Marc Masip: "Mobile is the hero of the 21st century"

26%

of adolescents make problematic or compulsive use of the mobile phone that can mean a high degree of interference in their daily life and have a negative impact on family life

.

The prevalence is higher among girls and increases with age, reaching 31% in high school.

44% admit to consuming

online

pornography and 42% admit to having resorted to

sexting

or exchanging sexual messages.

11% have received sexual propositions from an adult.

These are some of the conclusions of a study by the

Barrié Foundation

, the one with the largest regional sample carried out to date, on the impact of new technologies on the lives of young people.

It has been carried out by interviewing 10,000 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 from 59 schools and institutes in

Galicia

, but its technical coordinator,

Antonio Rial Boubeta

, professor of Behavioral Sciences Methodology at the

University of Santiago de Compostela

, says that "it corroborates the results of previous national studies" and insists that "we are facing a global problem.

Adolescence, technology, health and coexistence,

which was presented this Wednesday in La Coruña, shows that mobile phones are present in all types of adolescent contexts.

Not only do they go to school with him, but 61% admit to sleeping with their phone in their room and 29% use it at dawn every or almost every day.

23% spend more than five hours a day on social networks on weekends.

A third upload photos, videos or personal stories every week and 7% do dances on

TikTok

every day.

6% do viral challenges.

Although the

World Health Organization (WHO)

does not yet recognize it as a form of addiction, scientific evidence recognizes the harmful effects that so much telephone can cause: it is becoming a public health problem.

The study reflects the problems associated with the problematic use of the Internet.

He warns that the rate of depression is more than triple in adolescents who use the telephone with a high frequency.

The cases of anxiety, irritability and tiredness are also doubled.

The percentage of adolescents who sleep less than five hours a day is more than double.

They have more difficulties to accept their own body and there are greater manifestations of violence towards their parents, as well as a greater consumption of

junk food

.

The first mobile, at age 11

On average, children access their first mobile at 11.41 years of age.

When they are in 1st and 2nd ESO they already have a mobile phone with data.

The presence of adolescents on social networks is massive and widespread: almost 80% are on three or more social networks, while 62% have more than one profile on the same social network.

There is a white

profile

for parents and family and another for interacting with your friends.

But 41% have a public profile, open to everyone, through which any unknown adult can contact.

That is where many of the risky behaviors sneak in: 11% of those interviewed admit to having received sexual propositions from an adult, although this percentage rises to 18% in the case of girls (compared to 6.9% ) of boys).

There is 42% who receive messages of an erotic or sexual nature.

12% have received pressure to send photos or videos of a sexual nature and 4.4% have suffered

sextortion.

44% have entered pages with pornographic content.

Contact with strangers is another problem that the Security Forces and Bodies

have been warning about for some time

and that this study corroborates: six out of 10 adolescents have accepted someone they did not know at all on social networks or have contacted strangers through the internet , there is a 22% who have been in person with people they know through the Internet.

Video game addiction has been recognized since last January by the WHO as an addictive behavior disorder.

The work detects 4% of adolescents in this situation (5.5% boys and 1.7% girls), while it sees problematic use in 13%.

Therefore, 17% of students have problems with video games.

One in three consumes violence in video games

Almost one in three consume regular violence through video games and 41% have been insulted or humiliated while playing, while 29.3% admit to having insulted or humiliated others.

The study finds that rates of bullying are higher among adolescents who regularly play violent video games.

Its frequent consumption at the beginning of adolescence, around 12 or 13 years of age, doubles the rates of aggressors.

Given such serious effects, it is surprising that few parents tend to limit their children with screens: only 38% set some kind of rule in relation to mobile phone use and only 26% limit the hours of use.

One in five parents uses a mobile phone at meals.

The consequence is that in 12% of homes there are frequent discussions over the telephone.
