Yesterday, Monday, the head of the Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued a decision to freeze the activity of trade unions and professional federations, and to impose control over their financial assets, according to a statement issued by the council.

The statement added that the decision was directed to the concerned authorities to put it into practice.

Al-Burhan also issued a decision to form a committee headed by the General Registrar of Labor Organizations at the Ministry of Justice, "to form committees to manage unions, professional federations, and the Employers' Federation."

He explained that these committees are concerned with inventorying the financial balances and accounts of these unions inside and outside Sudan, and putting them under control.

The decision came at a time when the leaders of the army and a number of parties say that talks are underway to reach a new political settlement, and to end the stalemate prevailing in the country.

Since October 25, 2021, Sudan has witnessed protests calling for full civilian rule, and the removal of the military component from the transitional authority.
