In a way, the moderator is typical of the scene.

For three evenings, the actor, cabaret artist and entertainer Rainer Ewerrien moderated the Hessian Film Awards in three different cinemas, praising everyone from university graduation films to best feature films with snappy remarks and good humor.

The man from Frankfurt drove right through Hesse – to dash through the city center after the last stage in Frankfurt’s Eldorado, to play a performance of “The Old Citizen Captain” in the Volksbühne am Hirschgraben and, in a good mood with the moderator’s costume under his arm, to the film prize party to be back.

The film landscape in Hesse has grown and is successful.

Nevertheless, the vast majority of those who work here are united by a certain down-to-earth attitude, pragmatism and collegiality.

Which is why one or the other was amazed that "Spencer" has now received the award for the best feature film - an international production about Princess Diana, funded by Hesse, whose royal theme is not really close to the less conservative local film people.

At least you could get an idea straight away: award winners and the public were able to see the films on all three evenings of the Hessian Film and Cinema Awards.

The fact that the big gala was canceled and people met in the Hessian cinemas instead met with a very positive response.

And that a large number of award-winning films and nominees are finally being shown in Hessian cinemas - this is what we have been waiting for for years.

It was more of a coincidence that the usual award ceremony in the Alte Oper was canceled this time.

What is saved as a result could bring at least twice as much prize money to the battered cinemas, whose recognition awards currently total 150,000 euros - the cash register collapse of the Ministry of Art is still pending.

Above all, they will now have to think carefully about how to proceed with the film and cinema prize.

Another big gala with tiny bits of film and celebrities for the red carpet?

Awards ceremony in the cinema for everyone?

Or is there something in between – a kind of Hessian way?

That would probably be the most typical.
