France: unanimous, the Assembly votes a resolution "in support of the Iranian people"

The French National Assembly approved, this Monday, November 28, 2022, a resolution condemning in particular the restriction of the freedoms and rights of women in Iran.

The text was adopted unanimously by the participants.

A member of the French presidential majority (Renaissance), MP Hadrien Ghomi, himself a descendant of Iranians, had asked for “ 

a strong message 

” to be sent on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, mentioned in her speech the slogan chanted in the demonstrations in Iran: “ 

Women, life, freedom

 ”.

She lamented the " 

more than 400 snuffed lives

 ".

A situation which “ 

commands to act, with responsibility 

”, she pleaded.

“ 

New sanctions are in preparation 

” for the next meeting of European foreign ministers on December 12.

"Thousands of Iranian men and women have been arrested, [...] imprisoned because they wanted to live free," laments @MinColonna.

"It is the repression that falls, relentless, disproportionate."

The resolution voted on today "

 calls for the immediate release of the arbitrarily detained French nationals 

", seven in number, " 

condemns in the strongest terms the brutal and generalized repression

 ".

This repression falls, specifies the text, on “ 

non-violent demonstrators

 ”.

It denounces “ 

the use of torture

 ”.

The Assembly “ 

affirms its support for the Iranian people in their aspiration to democracy and respect for their fundamental rights and freedoms 

”.

Iran is the scene of a protest movement sparked on September 16 by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd arrested by morality police for violating the regime's strict dress code.

For the authorities in Tehran, these protests are " 

riots 

", encouraged by the West.
