In the aftermath of rare demonstrations, Beijing unsheathes its repressive arsenal and its communication.

The Chinese regime assured Monday that its "fight against Covid-19 will be a success", the day after demonstrations of an unprecedented scale across China to protest against Beijing's draconian "zero Covid" policy.

Among the slogans chanted in unison: “No Covid tests, we are hungry!

», « Xi Jinping, resign!

CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Withdraw!

or “No to confinements, we want freedom”.

Other demonstrators held up white sheets, in reference to the lack of freedom of expression in China.

Asked about the protests over the weekend, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a press briefing that under "the leadership of the Communist Party of China and (with) the support of the Chinese people, our fight against Covid-19 will be a success”.
