With this Plug-in Hybrid Q4 version, the Tonale family is now complete.

The plug-in hybrid variant with "virtual" all-wheel drive (petrol engine at the front, electric motor at the rear) is also the top of the range of the model.

This is demonstrated not only by the hefty price, but also by the remarkable workmanship.

Anyone who has had an Alfa from certain earlier periods knows that the quality of materials and assembly has not always been an asset of the brand.



But that was before.

"This Tonale is an alternative to well-known premium models in the C-segment", says big boss Jean-Philippe Imparato during the presentation.

And he's right.

Another high-end aspect of this Tonale, the impeccable sound insulation.

Add in the subtle transitions between gas and electric, and when you're driving quietly, you sometimes have to listen very carefully to know which of these sources is at work.

The electric range is clearly an argument: you can count on around fifty kilometers without waking up the petrol engine.

Alfa even promises up to 80 km in exclusively urban and congested traffic.

Perfect for work-home journeys.

Cushioning comfort could do better.

On bad surfaces, the suspensions do not completely erase holes and bumps, and the Tonale shows that it does not escape the reality that strikes almost all plug-ins: weight.



Alfa Romeo likes to describe its Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 as "sporty".

In acceleration, it is true that it defends itself, with a 0-100 km/h in just over 6 seconds.

But the weight, precisely, comes against a real dynamic feeling.

And then there is the direction, really too light, which makes you nostalgic for the precise direction, with the typical Alfa touch, of the Giulia.

The Tonale PHEV is therefore a modern and remarkably well finished vehicle.

Alas, we do not find these so special Alfa sensations.
