“In recent years, Moscow has made it more than clear that it considers this region its own, and is increasing its military presence,” the author notes.

Suchiu cites the expansion of the Nagurskoe airbase, known as Trefoilnik, as an example, which serves as "a communications outpost between the Eurasian mainland and the North Pole."

The journalist also notes that MiG-31 fighter-interceptors are flying from the base, and in the future, Armata, Kurganets-25 and Boomerang combat vehicles may also appear there.

Along with this, Suchiu writes that it is not yet clear when such equipment can be sent to the Arctic.
