Venezuela has been plunged for several years into a very serious political and economic crisis.

This crisis has turned into a humanitarian crisis.

More than seven million Venezuelans have fled their country to live elsewhere.

This Friday, November 25, the socialist government of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition meet in Mexico.

They are resuming talks that have been interrupted for more than a year.

The two camps are meeting, because several countries such as Colombia, France, Norway and Argentina have pushed for the resumption of negotiations.

Expectations are high.

The two parties have very different goals.

President Maduro wants an end to US sanctions on Venezuelan oil.

The geopolitical context is favorable to it: with the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, the Americans are more open to resuming economic relations with the socialist government.

The opposition wants guarantees for the organization of free and transparent elections.

The opposition coalition is already thinking about the presidential election of 2024.

If a global political agreement still seems far away, the two delegations could sign an agreement this weekend concerning the assets of the Venezuelan state, which have been frozen in the wake of the sanctions.

Unblocking them, at least in part, could help alleviate the serious humanitarian crisis in the country.

Neither the health system nor the distribution of electricity and drinking water are functioning properly in Venezuela.

Not to mention the schools which are in a catastrophic state.

Returning with tangible results for the population is a priority for both the socialist government and the opposition.
