The German Council of States agrees to extend the use of 3 nuclear plants

The German Bundesrat Council of States agreed to extend the use of three nuclear power plants until April next year.

Today, Friday, the Council of States declined to invite the mediation committee, for this law, which means that it can enter into force immediately.

The German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) had already approved the law earlier this month.

Thus, the Esar-2, Neckarfestheim-2 and Amsland nuclear power plants will remain in operation for a few more months, to secure the supply of electricity this winter.

Germany had intended to remove its last three nuclear plants from service at the end of 2022, to complete the abandonment process launched by former Chancellor Anguilla Merkel.

The extension of the work of the reactors comes amid an energy crisis afflicting Germany, the largest economy in Europe, due to the cessation of pumping Russian gas due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the extension aims to dispense with energy resources from Moscow.
