For weeks, Ukraine has been exposed to Russian terrorist attacks against the civilian population: electricity and water are cut off, as winter approaches.

What actually prevents Ukraine from proportionate retaliatory attacks against corresponding infrastructure on Russian territory?

Hi Gunnar, Ukraine is defending its territory and has chosen not to attack Russian territory.

The reason for this is mainly the risk of escalation, as Putin has threatened with nuclear weapons if there is a direct attack on Russia.

JP.

Hello.

Is there any research into what in the future are the major reasons for a possible world war.

Personally, I think climate change could be the biggest reason.

Hi JP, the research does not conclusively show that climate change leads to conflict.

When there is a lack of resources, people and communities can instead choose to cooperate.

On the other hand, there is good research support that shows a connection between, for example, oil and the risk of war.

Russia's war in Ukraine is an example of that: the financial basis for Russia's war of aggression is the fossil economy.

Hi,

How far can Russia go before te,x China steps in and pushes, from the outside this may seem like a passive acceptance of Russia bombing civilian targets like schools, hospitals etc

Hi Mats, that's a good question.

China has sent mixed signals regarding Russia's policy in Ukraine.

China is in a unique position to exert pressure (the English term for negotiations here is 'leverage') on Russia, so it is important to follow how China acts to understand how negotiations can start.
