The Secretary-General of the United Nations warns of "dangerous rhetoric" escalating nuclear threats

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Tuesday of "dangerous rhetoric" fueling threats to resort to nuclear weapons in the world, during an international forum on the "Alliance of Civilizations" in Morocco.

Guterres regretted "increasing divisions that threaten global peace and security, cause new confrontations, and make resolving old conflicts more difficult," at a press conference on the sidelines of the forum in the city of Fez.

He added, warning of "dangerous rhetoric escalating nuclear tensions," at a time when Western capitals accuse Russia of threatening to use its nuclear weapons to discourage it from supporting Kyiv in the ongoing war in Ukraine since February.

He continued, "Meanwhile, we are dangerously close to the abyss of a climate catastrophe, while hate speech, misinformation, anti-Semitism, discrimination against Muslims, persecution of Christians, xenophobia and racism are rampant."

Guterres called for "working in this turbulent world to calm tensions, encourage inclusion and social harmony, and build more united and resilient societies."
