The earthquake's magnitude has been measured at 5.6 by both the European EMSC and the American USGS.

Worst hit is the Cianjur region in West Java, where there have also been reports of several landslides.

Around ten buildings in the area have been damaged, including a boarding school and a hospital, local authorities say.

Even in the capital Jakarta, the tremors were clearly felt and the city's high-rises swayed.

- The tremor was felt so strongly.

"My colleagues and I decided to get out of our office on the ninth floor through the emergency stairs," said Vidi Primadhania, who works in South Jakarta.
