The International Atomic Energy Agency is today conducting an assessment mission of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after the site was bombed dozens of times over the weekend.

The explosions damaged buildings and equipment, some occurred "near reactors," but nuclear safety did not appear to be at risk, the IAEA said.

Agency director Rafael Grossi said that those who bombed the plant were "playing with fire" and "must stop immediately".

While there was no direct impact on the plant's key nuclear safety systems, the bombings came perilously close to them.

"We are talking about meters, not kilometers," Grossi warned, underlining that the explosions were among the most intense in recent months.

According to IAEA experts, the plant's management reported damage to a radioactive waste storage building, the cooling basin's irrigation systems, an electrical cable to one of the reactors and condensate storage tanks.
