Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shook hands with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the opening of the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar on Sunday, according to the Turkish presidency.

An official in the Turkish presidency confirmed to the French Press Agency this evening, Sunday, that this is the "first bilateral contact" between the two presidents.

The photo, which was published on the official website of the Turkish presidency, showed the two presidents - whose relationship has been cool since Sisi took over the presidency in Egypt in 2014 - shaking hands smilingly.

The photo, among other photos, shows the exchange of smiles between Erdogan and the heads of state and government who came to Qatar to attend the opening of the World Cup.

Anadolu Agency reported that Erdogan shook hands with Sisi and held brief talks with him and other leaders, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah II.

Relations between Cairo and Ankara have cooled since Sisi led, in July 2013, a military intervention to overthrow the late President Mohamed Morsi.

The two countries started political consultations at the level of senior officials in the two foreign ministries last year.

The Turkish president said last July that there was no reason not to hold high-level talks with Egypt.
