The Center Party proposes that everyone who owns a car and lives in the countryside should receive a discount at the pump of three kroner per liter of petrol or diesel fuel.

Exactly how the discount will benefit the customer is unclear, but Martin Ådahl, the Centerpartiet's financial spokesperson, envisages a collaboration with the petrol companies to design a solution that makes it easy to give the discount to those who are qualified directly when filling up.

- We have many in the countryside now who are struggling with extreme fuel prices and which remain at extreme levels.

Then we have to do something now.

When the government now lowers the price by a few kroner or really just a few cents, it's not enough, says Martin Ådahl.

Risk of rural residents "selling" the discount

Those who live in big cities, near big cities or in big cities do not get this discount according to the proposal.

They also do not get the tax cut that the government is planning at the turn of the year, which will result in a 40 öre lower diesel price and a 14 öre lower petrol price.

There is a ceiling of SEK 1,100 in the support proposed by the Center Party - which corresponds to upwards of 2,000 miles for a normal car, according to the Center Party's estimate.

At the same time, they recognize the risk that a rural dweller with a car that is not used can "sell" his discount to a Stockholmer who passes by on his way up to the mountains.

- It is more important that those who are now extremely hard pressed by these fuel prices and have no alternative get this opportunity.

If someone then gives it away to a Stockholmer in some way, it's not the biggest disaster, but it's that we're not doing anything for all those who are having such a tough time right now, says Martin Ådahl.
